Year: 2026
Organized By:
Dhaka Medical College Research and Academic Club (DMCRAC)
Venue:
Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka

American International University-Bangladesh has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence as a faculty-supervised student research team received the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 2nd National BioMed Health Research Conference (NBHRC-2026). The conference was organised by the Dhaka Medical College Research and Academic Club (DMCRAC) and held at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, from 15-16 October 2026, bringing together researchers, academics, clinicians, and young scholars from various institutions across the country. The award was presented to Shahriar Sadib for his outstanding oral presentation.

The award-winning research was titled “DiaTriage-BD: Calibrated Two-Stage Machine Learning for Resource-Efficient Type 2 Diabetes Screening in Bangladesh” with Submission ID: R4942.  The study was conducted under the supervision of Md. Mortuza Ahmmed, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, AIUB. The research team consisted of Shahriar Sadib, Sadiha Rahman, Md. Nasim Ahmed, and Arizit Chaki Artha.

The study addressed one of the most pressing public health challenges facing Bangladesh: the early detection of Type 2 diabetes in settings where healthcare resources are limited. Calibrated two-stage machine learning is an emerging approach that screens individuals in stages, so that more intensive diagnostic testing is reserved for those most likely to need it. Its practical value may include lower screening costs, more reliable risk estimates, better use of limited healthcare resources, and wider access to early detection in under-resourced settings. From this perspective, the research connected data-driven methods with the practical realities of healthcare delivery in Bangladesh. By focusing on calibrated predictions and resource efficiency, the study offered a timely contribution to discussions on how machine learning can support accessible, scalable, and context-appropriate screening tools.

In addition to winning the Best Oral Presentation Award, AIUB demonstrated strong institutional participation at the National BioMed Health Research Conference 2026. This achievement is not only a recognition of an individual research project but also a reflection of AIUB’s growing capacity for interdisciplinary research, academic leadership, and innovative learning. It reflects the university’s commitment to encouraging students to address real-life challenges through research, creativity, and scientific inquiry. Special appreciation is extended to the Office of Research, AIUB, for its continuous guidance, support, and encouragement in promoting student research and facilitating participation in national and international academic platforms.

AIUB proudly congratulates the award-winning presenter Shahriar Sadib, the research team, and their supervisor Md. Mortuza Ahmmed, and thanks the Office of Research for its valuable support throughout this journey. This success brings honour to the AIUB community and inspires future researchers to pursue meaningful, socially relevant, and impactful research for the development of Bangladesh.
