The Department of Microbiology under the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS), American International University-Bangladesh, is enriched with state-of-art microbiology laboratories such as Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) for practical training and advanced research. Students begin their practical work in the BSL-1 laboratory, where they learn basic microbiological techniques, laboratory norms, biosafety issues, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and bio-waste management. The BSL-2 laboratory supports advanced teaching and research, including microbial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, fermentation, functional bio-innovation, and development of innovative commercial products. Moreover, these labs also support advanced research in probiotics, immunobiotics, beneficial microorganisms, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food safety, antimicrobial alternatives, and value-added microbial products.
Professional Training Programs
The Department of Microbiology also offers short professional training programs for university students and working professionals. The contents of the program are designed to develop practical knowledge and skills in laboratory quality systems, accreditation requirements, risk management, auditing, and food safety.
The emphasis of the training is on learning by doing. Depending on the course, participants work with case studies, laboratory documents, risk assessments, audit exercises, and other practical activities based on relevant international standards. The programs aim to help students and professionals develop competencies applicable to laboratory and professional settings in Bangladesh and abroad.

GLP, SOPs, laboratory documentation, quality control, data integrity, risk
management, RCA, CAPA, and internal auditing.
· Risk-Based Thinking — 1–2 Days
Identifying and assessing risks, preparing risk registers, selecting
controls, and planning improvements.
· ISO 15189:2022 — 3 Days
Quality and competence requirements for medical laboratories, with
attention to quality control, method verification and validation, risk
management, and internal audit.
· ISO/IEC 17025:2017 — 4 Days
Quality and technical requirements for testing and calibration
laboratories, including method validation, measurement uncertainty,
metrological traceability, quality control, and CAPA.
· ISO 9001 — 3 Days
Quality Management Systems, process approach, risk-based thinking,
performance evaluation, corrective action, and continual improvement.
· HACCP — 2–3 Days
Food-safety hazards, Critical Control Points (CCPs), monitoring, corrective
action, verification, and preparation of a practical HACCP plan.
· ISO 22000:2018 — 3 Days
Food Safety Management Systems, prerequisite programs, hazard control,
traceability, verification, and continual improvement.
· Internal Auditor Training — 2 Days
Audit planning, collection of evidence, identification of nonconformities,
audit reporting, RCA, CAPA, and practical audit exercises.
